The Grants Pass Police Department (GPPD) regularly responds to incidents involving individuals with disabilities or special needs, including children with developmental disabilities and those on the autism spectrum. Over the past decade, law enforcement training has evolved to better recognize and respond to the needs of these individuals in our community, fostering positive and trusting relationships with them. In 2023, the GPPD began exploring compassionate and innovative practices aimed at nurturing relationships with children who have developmental disabilities or special needs. To support this initiative, the GPPD partnered with Paramedic Michelle Frazier, who developed the Frazier Sensory Bag. These bags contain various sensory-related items that children with developmental disabilities or special needs can use to help calm themselves during a crisis. These types of calls for service can be challenging for first responders and stressful for the child and their parents, family, or care providers. Michelle provided in-service training for GPPD Officers, and every patrol vehicle in the fleet was equipped with a Frazier Sensory Bag. Within this program's first year of implementation, the positive impact was evident, and nearly all Frazier Sensory Bags were deployed with overwhelming satisfaction. Time and time again, Officers provided feedback reporting how a Frazier Sensory Bag was instrumental in breaking barriers with special needs children who were stressed, scared, or reluctant to interact with first responders. The simple act of deploying a Frazier Sensory Bag conveyed to special needs children and their families that Officers respectfully recognized their needs, wanted to help compassionately, and desired to foster positive relationships. As a result, the GPPD encourages the public and our community partners to support this worthy initiative by raising awareness about the importance of these bags in assisting children with developmental disabilities or special needs during emergencies.
